Music

These are some things I've recorded. I like to do covers where I try to play every instrument, minus vocals, but I have a few original things too. I mostly play bass, but have become pretty ok on drums too. Guitar, I know some chords and how to noodle. Keyboards and mandolin, I own. I use Logic Pro for recording and I'm slowly trying to learn to mix through trial and error. I like to use these as snapshots of my playing/recording abilities so I try to only work on them for a few weeks at most before leaving them as they are and moving on to something else.

A six-string bass, a four-string bass, a guitar, and a mandolin on stands in front of an electronic drum kit. A MIDI keyboard and a melodica rest on the drum throne.

Collaborations (Original)

Eckos

Credits (Recorded November, 2022):

  • Hølf Wonoré: writing, bass, drums, mixing
  • Honald Reißer: writing, keyboards

Just a fun set of minor chords resolving to major with drum fills in between.

Tungsten

Credits (Recorded March, 2022):

  • Hølf Wonoré: writing, guitar, bass, drums, mixing
  • Honald Reißer: writing, keyboards, nonsense vocals

An attempt at a mini prog-metal epic. Lyrics were mostly improvised and changed every take. My double bass drum skills are weak.

Can you Carry this Funk? (It's too Heavy)

Credits (Recorded March, 2022):

  • Hølf Wonoré: writing, drums, mixing
  • Honald Reißer: writing, keyboards

Prepare your ears. Obnoxious clipping and distortion is The Vision™.

Run! (The Pandas Have Hunger in Their Eyes)

Credits (Recorded March, 2022):

  • Hølf Wonoré: writing, guitar, drums, mixing
  • Honald Reißer: writing, keyboards

A little bit Pink Floyd-ish. Same guitar as on Tungsten. Logic Pro can get a good range of sounds out of a mid-tier Telecaster. I blame the long non-sensical title on listening to Sufjan Steven's Michigan and Illinois albums too much at the time.

Cling Clang

Credits (Recorded March, 2022):

  • Hølf Wonoré: writing, basses, mixing
  • Honald Reißer: writing, keyboards

Some mess of polyrhythms. The bass is playing slow groups of 5, the 6-string bass high part is doing triplets, the bells are 8th notes I think.

Collaborations (Cover)

All This Time

Credits (Recorded March, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, mandolin, melodica, mixing
  • Gerard Honoré: vocals
  • Sting: writing

Of the covers I've done so far, I'm happiest with how this one came out. I also got to use pretty much every instrument I own (at the time), which is fun.

Nothing is Easy

Credits (Recorded December, 2022):

  • Wolf Honoré: rhythm guitars, "flute" (guitar), bass, drums, mixing
  • Gerard Honoré: lead/rhythm guitars, vocals
  • Jethro Tull: writing

There are more guitar parts in this song than I initially realized. The drums have a bouncy, fairly loose feel, which is fun, but it makes it harder to record the other parts against them.

Little Wing

Credits (Recorded September, 2022):

  • Wolf Honoré: bass, drums, MIDI bell thing, mixing
  • Gerard Honoré: guitars, vocals
  • Jimi Hendrix: writing

I think the guitar tone and the drum fills came out pretty well. This is my first real attempt at mixing vocals and they came out ok, but they don't stand out as much as I'd like.

Solo (Original)

Goldbach Conjecture

Credits (Recorded August, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: writing, bass, drums, keyboards, mixing

Pulsing synthy 7th chords + a lopsided drum beat + scalar noodling on a 6-string bass with chorus and octaver effects = my impression of Evan Marien. The name doesn't mean anything, I just like the idea of naming songs after famous math properties. It seems appropriately pretentious for jazzy/proggy instrumentals.

YYZZ Top

Credits (Recorded May, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: arrangement, guitar, bass, drums, mixing
  • Rush: writing

I joined a country/blues band that also enjoys Rush, and I came up with this arrangement to amuse myself.

Leonine

Credits (Recorded February, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: writing, bass, drums, mixing

I've been playing around with this melody for a couple years and just trying different ideas on the G and C strings over the open D drone. This is just a few of those ideas strung together into a more coherent structure. The name is an acknowledgement of the Leo Kottke influence.

'Leven

Credits (Recorded July, 2019):

  • Wolf Honoré: writing, keyboard (laptop), mixing

Made fully in Garage Band since I didn't have access to any real instruments at the time. 11/4 time signatures, completely unrelated sections, dissonant harmonies, a gong, cowbell, unsettling panning noises, what's not to like?

Lazer Phazer Man

Credits (Recorded June, 2014):

  • Wolf Honoré: writing, MIDI arrangement
  • Ronald Heisser: concept

A theme song for a smart watch game that never came to be. I think the idea was for an infinite side-scrolling shooter/platformer with only one button to jump. Too far ahead of its time. The song progresses through a Cø7 chord and changes modes every modulation. I'm not sure why I did that, but it definitely keeps you on your toes.

Solo (Cover)

Scene Two: I. Overture 1928

Credits (Recorded September, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, mixing
  • Dream Theater: writing

By far the most complex song I've done so far and my first keyboard solo. I could probably learn to do the bass and drums all the way through, but the guitar and keyboard parts were only possible one riff at a time.

Jackie Chan Adventures Theme Song

Credits (Recorded January, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, various MIDI instruments, mixing
  • Jim Latham: writing

I never realized before how much is going on in this song. That 16th note funk rhythm guitar thing is harder than it sounds.

This is How I Disappear

Credits (Recorded January, 2023):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, mixing
  • My Chemical Romance: writing

First song using my new guitar. Some small timing issues, and the mix is kind of muddy because I don't actually know what I'm doing and two distorted guitars take up a lot of sonic space. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it though, especially the opening drum fills.

Blackest Eyes

Credits (Recorded April, 2022):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, mixing
  • Porcupine Tree: writing

The drums were by far the hardest part. I'm not totally happy with them, but it's close enough to be recognizable. Figuring out the different guitar and keyboard sounds was fun. The second verse with the piano and synth arpeggios is really nice.

Killing in the Name

Credits (Recorded March, 2022):

  • Wolf Honoré: guitars, bass, drums, mixing
  • Rage Against the Machine: writing

A pretty faithful cover except for the guitar solo. The drum bit near the end is fun. I don't really miss Zack's vocals.
